Das deutsche Wort Herbst und das nordische haust (gesprochen: höist) bedeuten wie das englische harvest eigentlich "Ernte", sodass das Haustblót in erster Linie ein Erntefest bzw. ein Dankopfer für "gute Ernte und Frieden", die Segnungen der Vanengötter, ist. Als Schutzgott der Bauern wird dabei auch Thor besonders verehrt. Der Herbst beginnt mit Lughnasad, dem ersten der (mit Alban Elfed und Samhain) drei keltischen Erntefeste. Sein englischer Name Lammas comes from the Old English hlafmesse, as this the first loaves of bread from the new harvest were sacrificed. The Celtic festival's name comes from Lugh, the God of Druid wisdom, Odin equivalent.
